Behind the Scenes with JR Pavers on HGTV's Rock the Block Season 5

Four driveways. Four pool decks. Two weeks. One unforgettable experience.

When you run a family-owned paver installation company in St. Petersburg, Florida, you never quite know what the next phone call might bring. But one call from television production company Big Table Media turned into one of the most memorable projects in JR Pavers' history.

The team behind HGTV's hit renovation competition, Rock the Block, was preparing for Season 5 and needed a local contractor to tackle a substantial amount of outdoor work.

Their request was simple—at least on paper.

Four paver driveways. Four paver pool decks. And just two weeks to get it all done.

Could we handle it?

Challenge accepted.

How JR Pavers Landed the HGTV Project

Big Table Media initially contacted JR Pavers to request a quote for the upcoming project.

We put together our proposal, knowing that completing eight separate paver installations in such a short timeframe would require serious coordination, manpower, and planning.

As it turned out, the production company had received another contractor's quote that matched ours exactly—right down to the dollar!

Ultimately, they chose JR Pavers.

One thing we particularly appreciated about the experience was the production company's commitment to working with local contractors. Bringing a national television production into our area was exciting, but seeing local businesses have the opportunity to participate made it even better.

Eight Paver Projects, Eight Unique Designs

One of the most interesting aspects of Rock the Block was that no two homes were exactly alike.

Each of the four properties featured its own design vision, which meant different materials, patterns, and finishes for every driveway and pool deck.

Our responsibility was to bring those outdoor designs to life while maintaining the installation quality and attention to detail that JR Pavers is known for.

From the driveways welcoming visitors to the pool decks framing each home's outdoor living space, the pavers played an important role in the finished appearance of the properties.

And with the clock ticking, there wasn't much time to waste.

Installing Pavers on a Television Set Isn't Exactly Quiet!

We knew the schedule would be demanding, so we arrived with a large crew ready to tackle the work head-on.

What we hadn't fully anticipated was just how different a television production environment would be from our typical construction site.

Picture multiple trades working simultaneously, crews moving between properties, designers checking progress, and production teams trying to capture their scenes.

Then imagine someone calling out:

"Quiet on the set!"

There's just one problem.

There's nothing particularly quiet about installing pavers!

Between cutting materials, compacting the base, operating equipment, and coordinating our crew, paver installation isn't exactly a silent activity.

Add in the constant movement of other contractors walking through our work areas, and things got interesting pretty quickly.

We certainly had our challenges, but it made for a memorable experience and gave us a whole new appreciation for everything that goes into producing a home renovation television show.

A Construction Site with a Lot of Moving Parts

The biggest challenge wasn't necessarily the amount of paver installation work. It was coordinating that work around everything else happening simultaneously.

On a typical residential project, we have much more control over our immediate workspace and installation schedule.

On Rock the Block, there were countless moving parts, with different trades working toward the same tight production deadline.

It required flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to adapt throughout the project.

Despite the unusual working conditions, being part of such a large collaborative effort was an incredible experience.

More Than Just Another Project

One of the highlights was having the opportunity to interact with the show's designers throughout the process.

It was exciting to see their creative visions taking shape and to know our work would become part of the finished homes featured on national television.

At the conclusion of the project, the production team even hosted a wonderful party for the cast and contractors.

After the intensity of the construction schedule, it was a great opportunity for everyone to come together, celebrate, and enjoy the experience.

Looking back, the challenges, the people, and the behind-the-scenes moments are what made this project so special.

From HGTV to Your Home: The Same Commitment to Quality

While most residential projects don't involve television cameras, celebrity designers, and an entire production crew, our approach to paver installation remains the same.

At JR Pavers, we believe that beautiful results begin with proper preparation, thoughtful design, and quality workmanship.

Whether we're installing a custom paver driveway, transforming a backyard patio, or creating a beautiful new pool deck, we bring that same dedication to every project.

We're proud to be a local St. Petersburg company that had the opportunity to contribute to HGTV's Rock the Block Season 5.

And we're just as proud of the work we do for our neighbors throughout St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and the Tampa Bay area.
